Gordon Onslow Ford's painting career spanned nine decades. This page offers a small selection of his work from each decade of his life.
England (1912-1937) Onslow Ford began painting at an early age. He was 11 years old when he did his first oil paintings. His subject in painting were landscapes and seascapes until he joined the Surrealists in 1938 in Paris. Roberto Matta once said “Gordon had to give up his trees to become a Surrealist!”
Paris (1937-1939) During this time, Onslow Ford shifts from seeing the outer world to searching the inner worlds. Three Trees Move Along (Ref. 5) was one of the first transition works where he leaves landscape painting to explore automatism.
